How did it go?
It did NOT go like I thought it would, ha ha.
THAT is one of the things I so enjoy about running--it's ALWAYS an adventure, and you can just go ahead and expect the unexpected.
PERFECT weather.
I was rested.
I had not been eating (too) crazy.
Injury free.
I even made a deal with God that if I finished in x amount of minutes that was a sign I was SUPPOSED to do the full marathon Saturday (um, DIVINE INTERVENTION is an entirely different topic for another day!)
So, the race began DOWNHILL--which I liked--then a little uphill--and it seemed HARD. HUH? How could that be?
I was rested, PREPARED, had not slacked on my training.
HARD--and in the 1st half mile I considered walking--which I haven't done in a couple of years in a 5K race. "Too hard," I told myself, "I don't have it today."
Oh dear.
This grandma-to-be had to do some TOUGH LOVE TRASH TALK to herself to get her rear up the hills and around the course. It was a fight with myself every step of the way. Finished in 27:42, not my best, but very respectable. PLUS, I knew the only reason I got under an HOUR was because I really REALLY fought the mental fight.
And I think that's what my problem was with this 5K. It was my last big challenge of our series--we have a 10K trail run in a couple of weeks--but that's not the same creature.
So, I've assigned myself new strategy: gotta work on that mental part. I let nerves get to me. They were so bad, I even (briefly) entertained the idea of not even GOING. What the??????????
I realize this was a rinky-dink 5k, not the NYC marathon.
Ideas on how to handle the mental aspects, regardless of the distance? Doing the half Saturday, and I'm totally relaxed, feel NO PRESSURE. How wonderful THAT IS. Now, just gotta figure out how to transfer that to our racing series .............

I TOTALLY forgot to do the award for best costume and everyone was leaving. I believe it was Judy Day who came up and asked about it so I quickly got back on the mich and called everyone back. Because most were out of costume by then and there were so many great costumes, we decided to give everyone who took the time and creativity to dress up a Havasu Hustler Long Sleeve Tech Tee. That was a BIG hit! So Dana, aka, Mr. Tuxedo Man, we owe you a nice pullover! When will you be at the next group run?

Fun race and so great seeing so many locals out there again. We are really building a good running community but I wonder where most of these people run and when?
Karen and Richard did a great job as usual..thanks guys.
Now onward to the Turkey Trot.

Midsouth Marathon and a Half in Wynne, Arkansas is the scene.
Definitely want a rematch.
But the race is NEXT weekend, laughing, not really time for a couple of long runs, since last weekend I did a half.
One of my running buddies (logged over 300 miles last month) asked me to PLEASE be smart and do the marathon WHEN I'M PREPARED.
I can't wait to have a grandson in a couple of months, but it does remind me the clock is ticking, ticking, ticking.
53 MARATHONS!!!!!!!!!!! DANG KODI!!!!!!!!!! You are my hero!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy Halloween to all of you Havasuhustlers!!!!!!!

Well, I since I've never done a marathon, I can't really relate. There was a very tough 12k course I used to race every year, and every year while racing it I'd say the same thing, "I'm never doing this again" - yet when it came time to sign up, I was right there doing it again. Like Rhett said, if you can get a long run or two in and with your running base, you'll do just fine! Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Sunshine, you wouldn't be a runner if you didn't always want to get better and do more. That is just how we roll. How much time do you have to get ready for this marathon. I'm sure with a couple long runs between now and then, and the running base you currently have, you at least won't die, will most likely finish, and will probably do it all under 6 hours. Good luck.

Yep, 53 times. Every time I run a marathon I ask my self why am I doing this and it's going to be the last time. Then I think, it wasn't that bad and I start the long cycle all over again. I like your goals, but I never even think about #1 and anymore I just hope for under 5:30...would like to get back to under 5:00 or even better 4:30.
What race are you considering and when?

WHY ON EARTH am i thinking of doing a full marathon again?
Delusions of grandeur, for sure.
A half is what I'm trained for. I walk/jogged a slow 2 1/2 hour half yesterday and finished with lotsa fuel left in the tank.
I'm always glad when the half is over and so thankful I've not got that much more to complete.

Surely I'll wake up tomorrow and have regained my senses.

Reasons I'm considering it:
1. I had such a terrible experience with this course in 2005, after training for 10 full months. I was ready for 20 miles (which I'm NOT now)
but the thing is, I'm so much more educated about the running/race experience than I was then. ( a little knowledge IS a dangerous thing or I wouldn't be
thinking about this crazy stuff!) But I WANT a rematch!
2. When my grandson Silas arrives, my life WILL change drastically.
3. I'm HEALTHY--and who knows what the future holds???

Reasons not to:
1. risk of injury--but that's there everyday
2. I'm not trained, but I DO think I have great stamina and could do much more than I DO
3. It's a CRAZY idea
4. I've done one, and have nothing to prove
5. People DIE

My goal would be to 1.not die 2. finish 3. hope for under 6 hours, in that order
Have YOU ever done anything this crazy???????

Yes, this is exactly when my sedentary coworkers like to point out the dangers of my running lifestyle.
I don't want to die while running--whether it's in a marathon, or get hit by a car, or get attacked by some psycho.
But I will go on record saying if it happens--my life was still greatly GREATLY enriched by running. It has made me a better person. Period.

It is rather strange especially considering the weather in the 40s. From another running post I read, the runners were actually running the half marathon at the event. (Not sure if that is true or not though.) Anyways, just bad luck. Hopefully it won't start that whole thing again.

It was great to see you out there too! By the way you ran, you would never even know you were injured. Glad you were able to make it and hope to see you at the Rcy Halloween Run!

Did you see on the news tonight that three runners died at the Detroit Michigan marathon today. They all seemed to be separate incidences, yet all within 17 minutes and no explanation yet as to why or what happened. What are your thoughts? And is this going to start the whole “running 26.2 is bad for you” saga?

OK, I know this is just a low key, fun run, but I'm getting excited to actually run in a race tomorrow. It's been since April since my last race and even though I am far from being in shape, I'm excited to get out there and see just how bad off I am. I hope to see many of you out there tomorrow. It will be fun.

It starts at the corner of Acoma and McCulloch. Last year it was VERY unorganized and I don't think it'll be much better this year so be prepared. There are three races total and when I asked when the 3 mile adult race starts, nobody knew. My guess is the kids 1/2 mile will start at 8, followed by the junior high 1.5 mile around 8:15, and our starting closer to 8:30. There will be a group of us leaving the Library at 7:30am for a 2 mile "warm-up" run to the start location if anyone wants to join us! Good luck - even if it's unorganized it's still a lot of fun running along the parade route. People are already sitting out cheering you on along the course.

Thanks for the info. As long as my foot holds up over the next couple weeks, I plan on running the recycled race on Oct 31. It is exciting to see more local races pop up and I want to support them the best I can.
