I just signed up for this Saturday's run. My foot seems to be holding on so I'm excited to get out there and run with you guys. I hope to see many of you there. It will be fun to race and then 3 weeks later race the same course at the Turkey Trot and see if we can improve our times.

WHY ON EARTH am i thinking of doing a full marathon again?
Delusions of grandeur, for sure.
A half is what I'm trained for. I walk/jogged a slow 2 1/2 hour half yesterday and finished with lotsa fuel left in the tank.
I'm always glad when the half is over and so thankful I've not got that much more to complete.

Surely I'll wake up tomorrow and have regained my senses.

Reasons I'm considering it:
1. I had such a terrible experience with this course in 2005, after training for 10 full months. I was ready for 20 miles (which I'm NOT now)
but the thing is, I'm so much more educated about the running/race experience than I was then. ( a little knowledge IS a dangerous thing or I wouldn't be
thinking about this crazy stuff!) But I WANT a rematch!
2. When my grandson Silas arrives, my life WILL change drastically.
3. I'm HEALTHY--and who knows what the future holds???

Reasons not to:
1. risk of injury--but that's there everyday
2. I'm not trained, but I DO think I have great stamina and could do much more than I DO
3. It's a CRAZY idea
4. I've done one, and have nothing to prove
5. People DIE

My goal would be to 1.not die 2. finish 3. hope for under 6 hours, in that order
Have YOU ever done anything this crazy???????

Did you see on the news tonight that three runners died at the Detroit Michigan marathon today. They all seemed to be separate incidences, yet all within 17 minutes and no explanation yet as to why or what happened. What are your thoughts? And is this going to start the whole “running 26.2 is bad for you” saga?

The regional high school cross country meet is being held at rotary park on October 31st at 1000 & 1030 AM. This might be fun to go to after the Halloween run. I am hoping to run, but I am not sure I am going to be able to make it to either since my son has an out of town football game on that day.

I guess it’s about time I get around to doing this. Not sure exactly why I’m dragging my feet. Basically I had a really nice trip to St. George this weekend. It is the first time in my 13 years of running this I stayed in St. George, so didn’t have the extra early morning drive from Mesquite. That in itself made a difference. Unlike Dana, I can't remember much about each mile. He gave a good overview of what the course and weather was. I can remember a few things, however. Some of this might not make a lot of sense but the people I'm referring to are 'friends' from prior years and are always on our St. George Forum. So just bear with me. It was really nice seeing a few of you at the expo, my apologies to Smooth and Larry for almost running you over. I was paying more attention to where I thought I should be going since they changed things around this year. The ever congenial Mark was there with his lovely MrsFit, geesh and I couldn’t remember her name..sorry Kristi and meeting Marc E face to face for the first time. Good start of a nice weekend! Seeing so many at the fires was wonderful. Seeing the old timers is always great and having a very brief conversation with our new guy, HBR was nice. Okay, the race now starts and a few other things I remember, in no particular order of time. My first encounter with other Fourumites on the road was exactly at the nine mile mark when I decided to take off my overshirt and run in my singlet, also got rid of the gloves. That’s when Rob & Lisa came up on me, all smiles. I wish I could have stayed with them but they were way too strong looking. The ball of my left foot started burning. My thoughts are, great, don’t tell me I’m developing another Morton’s Neuroma. Been there, done that. Well maybe my sock is just bunching up. Changed my stride and it went away. Cramp in my left calf somewhere around mile 18, changed my stride a little and it moved to my right hamstring. Okay what’s going on here? Changed my stride a little and it went away. Good! DonG passed me somewhere around 20 miles almost the same place as last year. I think I was in a fog because I wasn’t even sure it was him. Somewhere right after mile 23 the dynamite BeMo buzzes past me like I was standing still, maybe I was! She is unbelievable. A couple things I accomplished but don’t know it was really smart…I ran Veyo without walking, in fact, the only time I walked from the start to mile 18 was thru the water stations, which was my plan. I actually did better on Veyo then I thought I would..good news for me. My half time was only 5 minutes slower than I planned and just about the same time I ran in Laughlin in March. That’s good.
After mile 18 I only walked a couple times and no more than a minute but I just couldn’t pick up the pace. I do know at mile 20 I was hungry. My breakfast bagel was gooey and gummy so it went into the trash so all I had was a bowl of oatmeal and ½ banana that Brad was about to throw away. At any rate my finish time was 5:24:57 quite a bit slower than I hoped for. Was I disappointed? Yes. Should I have been? No. Slicks 6Ps holds true. I was not well prepared for this race and it showed in my performance. Will I run another marathon? I don’t know. I feel more beat up after the ones that take longer than the faster ones I used to run. Perhaps if I could get in some good training, I’ll do more.

We the great “HAVASU HUSTLERS” ran the inaugural Ragnar Las Vegas relay this weekend. We really had a great time and needless to say, everyone is ready for another one. It was the first for everyone but me since I ran the Wasatch Back in June. One thing I found out about Ragnar, when they say very hard, they mean it…BIG TIME!!!. If they every said very, very hard, I'd forget about doing that event. (LOL). My three legs were 8.6 (very hard), 3.6 (hard) and 3.9 (moderate). My first leg started downhill for a mile (okay, time to hold back a little) then rolled and dropped a total of 200 feet to mile 3.5. I was trying hard to be conservative since I knew the next 5 were all uphill, and uphill it was. There was construction so part of it was rocky and loose gravel and with cars driving over it pretty dusty. My second run was at 1:30AM…in the dark, the first two miles uphill, in a drainage ditch with sprinklers running and water coming down the hill. That went on for most of two miles. Somewhere it switched from the ditch to a trail and somewhere the trail ended and I kind of freaked because there were no signs and I wasn’t sure where to go. Off to the left I saw the ditch again and took off in that direction and started up the ditch only to notice a couple minutes later someone above me on the trail. I stayed in the ditch as long as I could but it came to an underpass that was too low so I had to scramble up a hill to find the trail again. Fortunately other runners had made the same bad decision. After that episode it turned onto some city streets, leveled out and I finished that one pretty well. BTW, if any of you have driven toward Boulder City and down the hill toward Lake Mead, you know that steep hill, well that was the one I ran UP! I remember driving it last year thinking I would hate the idea of running or biking up this hill. Never thought in my wildest dreams I'd do it. My third leg started in the middle of a long gradual climb and stayed that way the whole time except for about a ½ mile fairly flat stretch, well at least it looked flat. The total climb was 330 feet, which doesn’t sound all that bad but when you’re operating on 3 hours sleep over the last 24 hours it’s not easy. One thing I will say, all the other teams were supportive as well as my own was, not only with the ‘looking goods’, and all the other things we normally hear, but offering water and spraying runners, if they want it. My times were all slower than I predicted but I was satisfied with what I did. I think I usually set my goals at a level I used to be able to easily reach and it’s hard for me to get there anymore but if I didn’t do it that way, I wouldn’t put in as much effort to achieve them.
GREAT FUN, GREAT TEAM and a lot of WONDERFUL TEAMMATES. THEY REALLY ROCK.

Here's My race report for the St. George Marathon.

I began getting nervous about a week before the race when the weather channel was predicting 15-20 mph headwinds, But since I obviously don't have control of the weather, I tried to put it out of my mind.

My first good break occured 3 days before the race when I posted on a SGM forum board begging for a ride to the start. That way my ever so caring wife who drove me to the race despite having no interest in it whatsoever would be able to sleep in. Within 3 minutes of posting, I got a reply back from a runner staying in the same complex who offerred to take me to the start.

We left at 0430 and went straight to a bus for the trip to the starting line. It was probably in the 40's at this time, but being acclimated to Havasu, I was fairly cold. The ride to the start seemed to take forever. I began wondering how I was going to run a distance that took 30-45 minutes to drive in 3 hours and some change. The start was colder, but there were enough bonfires going to keep everybody warm. There was minimal wind and it was actually a tailwind. Guess those guys at the weather channel were wrong - woo hoo. About a 1/2 hour before the start I got in line for a port-a-pottie, but this moved at a rate somewhere between molasses and pond water. I finally got to the front of the line with my watch showing 5 minutes to the gun. I ran to the extra clothes drop off truck and began to shed the extra layers. As I stuffed them into my bag, the cord tore off. At that point, they announced overhead that they were ready to start and 10 seconds later the gun went off. I threw my open bag into the truck and watched my sweats fall out immediately. I wrote them off and ran to the start. Thank goodness for the timing chips, because I ended up taking another minute after the gun putting my race belt on and getting my Ipod situated.

By this time the weather was perfect, the wind was at my back, and my legs felt fresher than they had in months. About 1 mile in, one of the 2 small water bottles on my fuel belt fell out. I thought this was unusual, since I had never had a full bottle fall out before. I ran back, picked it up and started to put it back on the run, when the 2nd one fell out. It was at that time I realized I had put my belt on upside down, and apparently in this position the bottles are not very secure. Who would have guessed? I stopped by the side and got everything taken care of and went on.

I glided past the first 7 miles at a fairly good clip and was about 2-3 minutes faster that my proposed pace, but I felt very comfortable and my heart rate was fairly controlled. At 7 miles, there is a very steep hill. Picture the steep part of the multiuse path then make it steeper. I slowed down, but didn't try to kill myself up it. At the base, I caught a group of experienced runners going for a 3:15 pace (my goal was 3:20) so I slowed down a bit.

By 13 miles, I had cleared the uphill portion of the course and the rest was downhill. I hit the 13.1 point at almost exactly 1:40 minutes which was actually ahead of pace given the fact that the second half should be nearly all downhill and quicker.

Between 13-18 miles, I actually made up another 1-2 minutes and was again ahead of pace. This is when I started getting some mild calf and quad cramping. It wasn't too bad, but it kept me from accelerating too much even though my heart and lungs felt like they could go harder.

I was still running about 8 minute pace by 23-24 miles when the 3:20 pace group passed me. I wasn't able to stay with them, but was able to keep them in site and they were only slowly pulling away.

I had run out of my gel that I had placed in one of the bottles of my fuel belt at about 22 miles, and in retrospect, I really should have taken the last packet with the extra caffiene at the 24-25 mile point. Just after 25 miles, I hit a huge wall. My watch showed 3:10 at the 25 mile aid station, and even though I was tired I was still doing ok and though I would be able to make 3:20. Unfortunately, I bonked hard and it took every ounce of effort I had just to get to the finish. I think my last mile was probably close to 10 minute pace, crushing my chance to qualify for Boston.

My final time was 3:21:54 which was 55 seconds short of qualifying. However, This was a great race for me and I am very happy with the result. My first marathon was 3:34:50, so I crushed my old PR.

Im recovering on a cruise ship with my family. I will see everybody when I return.

The Chi Omega Make a Wish 5K was yesterday--the 12th race in our running series, and my 17th event this year.
10 minutes AFTER the race--I started sneezing and coughing nonstop--and continued all night and still this morning.
Maybe THAT had something to do with my race performance..............
Saturday dawned cool and beautiful.
But what DOES one do when she has an afternoon race?
I tried to stay busy, but not overdo--worked on the house and paperwork and a myriad of tasks.
I had been dreaming of a 26 something finish.
Could today be the day?
27:11 my best time ever so far.

Finally, finally, 2 came and I could head to Jonesboro.
70s and sun under a blue sky with some light wind.
So happy to be out there and able to run.
Hurry up 4 p.m.!

The course started on Main Street, looped down to the "hood" and finished back on Main.
Only a couple of hills--a decent one at .5 and then the long one most of the last .5.
Finally, finally, the gun sounded and off we went.
The first quarter, I knew I didn't have it.
Saw some of my competition pass me by, and felt like I was running in slow motion.
I decided this would be my last competition for the year.
This was just NO FUN and maybe I was just plain tired.
Couldn't kick myself, cause I KNEW I was pushing, pushing, pushing.
If I finished dead last, I knew I was giving it everything--but I kept wondering what about
all those hours and hours and hours of hard training I had put in?
I came into the race prepared and rested.
Plus, mentally, I KNEW I was ready.
What happened?

People were out waving and cheering all along the way.
Also, mowing, and several times I smelled some kind of chemical
they must have been using on their yards.

Coming up the first hill at .5 I felt--strangely--oddly--stronger!
I passed a few, and decided when I crested the hill to hold nothing back, even this early in the race.
Short downhill, and then flat, flat, flat.
Fly feet, faster, faster, faster!
Mile 1: 8:15.
WHAT??????
I had never done a mile that fast!
That gave me encouragement!!!!

Strong, I feel strong I told myself.
Fast, fast, feet.
Relax.
Smile.
Smile.
A few more people dropped off, and of course there was the allure of the water station.
My throat was KILLING ME. A sudden thing!
Burning, burning, and I was gasping for breath.
Push. Push.
Do the best you can TODAY.
Does not matter who is in front of me, nor who is behind, nor how close.
Just run your race I kept saying.

Coming up on mile 2, and I am actually CLOSE to Carol!
What the?????????
How did THAT happen???
She could hear me behind her--gasping, gasping, and kept cheering me on and saying
come on! Come on! You can do it!
Mile 2: 16:45
Dang it!
All I had to do was about a 10 minute final mile and I would actually SEE 26 on the clock!
Go go go go!
Pick up your feet!
Strong, you feel STRONG--I told myself.
Ran past some more runners--
much YOUNGER runners--meaning they didn't have
all those years getting out of bed to put in the miles--
but also, they wouldn't be staring at 53 birthday candles on their cake.
And there ahead of me--suddenly--was the long hill.
Not a steep hill.
A long hill.
My throat--my throat was burning like FIRE!
My feet felt like concrete blocks.
What?
What was happening to me?
I was gonna do a 15 minute final mile?
I could feel myself struggling, struggling, dying.
Top of the hill, and a sharp right turn.
Police had traffic stopped and I decided I was pushing right up to the intersection, even if he let the traffic loose again.
He didn't.
That was all I had.
So close to the finish, and I was dying.
Just keep lifting my legs.
DON'T GIVE UP, DON'T GIVE UP!
Turn left--up a slight incline--almost there--I couldn't fade now.
I was NOT GONNA FADE NOW.
I could see injured Paula and fast, fast John there at the top of the hill hollering for me.
My head was pounding and I pushed for one last surge.
Top of the hill and a sharp turn left and I can see the clock!
It still said 25 something!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I had to do was run straight through the finish.
I would make it unless I died, which seemed like a definite possibility.
26:11 as I was running under the banner.
Finished 26:19.
I feel like I won FIRST PLACE OVERALL!!!
Laughing.
Immediately started sneezing, sneezing, coughing, coughing.
Did not care.
Floating, yes WOBBLY to the point I had to hold on to not fall.
So happy, so happy, so happy!
1st my age group.
Got my picture made with the Make a Wish child.
All the winners did.
Precious little girl.
Tears when I thought of how lucky I am to have the health to run.
They said they'd mail us our winning plaques.
An award could no way come close to how I felt right then, stomping my previous best time, standing at the finish with my friends, celebrating an event to make the life of a sick child a little easier.
A once in a lifetime memory.
I am blessed!!

Last Saturday's race was about as good as you can ask for September in Arkansas.
70s, low humidity, just enough hills to keep it interesting.
5k in 27:44. That might not be fast for you all, but it's blisteringly fast for me, ha ha! 18 months ago when I finally broke 30 minutes I cried when I crossed the finish line.
5K Saturday afternoon on the agenda. I really need a good race, as there are only 3 left in our local racing series. Gotta admit I'm tired--that was race 16?? for the year-- and ready to just relax, do some half marathons (my favorite) and be done with the competition!
I keep telling myself to relax, no pressure, THIS race is only training for the next race.
Happy Running to ALL of you!!!!!!!!!
P.S. I WILL eventually head your direction for a half, and when I do, I'll let you all know! Never met a runner I didn't like.

Hey there! I'm interested in doing some or even all of the distance runs. I want to do the LV 1/2. I did seven by myself this weekend, although it was on a treadmill, anything more than that is more fun with company! How does it work?

Greetings Fellow Hustlers;

I just got back from Henderson where I ran the Calico Racing Recycled 5K. What a great race. It started at Railroad Pass hotel and Casino and there is a fantastic multi-use path up there that runs along the railroad tracks (who would've known) with beautiful desert terrain and a great view of Vegas. I was the 3rd place overall female finisher in a time of 27:17 and finished 5th overall (male and female) out of 36 runners. Like Karen's race, I received a recycled race shirt (from calico racing), medal (from the run with the devil 2008) and 3rd place finisher plaque (from Running from an angel 5k) and they had great post race food. I was the only Havasuvian present so I did my best to represent.

I don't know if all are aware but I made a New Years Resolution for 2009 to run a race a month and so far (knock wood) have done just that.

Happy Running and I will see you all in the streets!

Some of you already have met and ran with or behind Jimmy before. Well he's at it again. Here is the latest.
He is now in the middle of cross-country. I think I need to take some lessons from him on how to get faster. Wonder if I could get him to run St. George Marathon or the Ragnar Relay for me.
A couple weeks ago he ran a 2 miler in Big Bear..it's at altitude, on a uphill rough trail. I don't remember his exact time (darn old age) but I think it was 13:13 and he tied the course record and beat the second place guy by over a minute.
Last week he ran a course that was a little over 2 miles in 14:09 with 58 runners and was 1st overall. Temp was 103º,
Yesterday he ran a 3 mile road race, came in third overall, 1st in his AG (He turned 13 on Aug 22). His time was 17:17. First place was 26 years old, beat Jimmy by 7 seconds, second places was 17, beat him by 3 seconds.
My daughter also ran the 3 miler yesterday without any good training and ran 25:06, 2nd in her ag.
They make me proud.

so i freaked out a little this morning. i'm the one bringing up the rear in the group and on the back side of the island are two coyotes running from the trail over to the dirt area toward the water. they watched me and i watched them and then some dog from a guy in a van toward the water started chasing the coyotes - 2 or 3 of them. the coyotes let our their typical "howling" - which is also a litle unnerving. i kinda did a little combo run/walk keeping an eye on them. i know - "they are probably more scared of you than you are of them". short of getting faster - which is really not possible - i think the run/walk combo was the right thing to do. what do you guys think?

Hi. I am a new and recent Mom looking to get back in shape. I just had our daughter 6 weeks ago and need to ease back into exercising. I am looking to jog, bike, and/or go to the gym with someone that I will not hold back. I would like to exercise EARLY in the morning anytime after 5am, but wanting/needing to finish by 6:30-7:00am Mon-Friday and some weekends too. I am really not a big fan of big group types of exercising so I am hoping to find someone or a small group to workout with.

4 miles of hills for me!
I keep hearing, "hills are speedwork in disguise."
You all think that's true? I'd like to believe it.
But I'm pretty sure, hills are helpful, but they can't replace speedwork.

Hello Hustlers: I am just sitting here in San Diego and going a little bit nuts waiting for the next 20 hours to go by so I can get to the start of the S.D.R&R Marathon. I had some issues with a very sore calf that made me miss a couple of the last important weeks of training but all seems fine so I will be out there tomorrow to try my first marathon. Drove the course this morning and there sure are of lot of hills. That should be offset by the near perfect weather. It is about 62 degees right now with a light wet fog, same expected tomorrow. OK, now I will try to nap, have to rise at 3:30 AM to make it to the start on time. Why do races start so darn early !!!!!! BEBO aka.Bullhead Bob aka.BOB

PS. are any other Hustlers running this race????

I opted out of running this because of the plantar fasciitis (it's feeling better). I almost did the 5K but because of the up and coming Wasatch Back Relay on the 19th decided to be the cheering section.
Ron and my daughter ran the 1/2.
Ron's time 1:49:44, his time for the Havasu Half was 1:57:27.
Judy's time was 1:50:42, a PR, her time for the Laughlin Half was 2:02:41.
My two grandsons and their exchange student ran the 5K.
Jason (14) 21:14, a PR, Jimmy (12) 18:08, a PR, Jay (16) 21:32, also a PR.

I have had a dream to start running. My 37th birthday is approaching and I would so like to start running 5Ks, 10ks, and eventually a half/full marathon. I know all of this will take time, but I'm willing to put in the time and effort.
The problem is that I have zero, none experience in running. I want a group that I can go with that will motivate me and support me, but I feel like I'm going to be the remiedal loser in this club.
Are there any others like me here? Is it going to be a hinderence to your group if I show up. Motivation is sky high! Effort is through the rough. My husband is supportive. My skills are totally lacking. I will not be offended if this is not the place for me. I just need something, or a direction to help me out.
Any ideas? Can I join?
