so i freaked out a little this morning. i'm the one bringing up the rear in the group and on the back side of the island are two coyotes running from the trail over to the dirt area toward the water. they watched me and i watched them and then some dog from a guy in a van toward the water started chasing the coyotes - 2 or 3 of them. the coyotes let our their typical "howling" - which is also a litle unnerving. i kinda did a little combo run/walk keeping an eye on them. i know - "they are probably more scared of you than you are of them". short of getting faster - which is really not possible - i think the run/walk combo was the right thing to do. what do you guys think?

I saw 2 coyotes on one of my runs, but they hadn't seen me. I made a noise towards one and scared the poop out it (not literally). There are 2 in my neighborhood that I see frequently when walking my dog. I make sure they know I see them, so they avoid me. I do believe they are not really interested in attacking people. However, if you have a small dog with you I'd be a little more concerned.

I've seen them on the island lots of times and even on the field at Thunderbolt when I'm there. I ignore them and they just go their own way. Like Wendy said, if you have a dog then there is more to be concerned about.

I love the coyotes I see when working out. I think they are neat animals. They will leave you alone and will always run away if you get too close.

Shaun and I were swimming out on the island last Monday when the smoke from the LA fire was thick so as the sun came up it was brilliant RED, not orange. With each stroke I could see it peak out from the hills a little more. As we came out of the water, there stood a coyote on the edge of the bluff, the sun only allowing us to see it's silhouette. It was quite a magnificent site and beautiful morning!

I see coyotes FREQUENTLY on my runs (I am all over town right now) but was only slightly worried when I came running up on a pack of 4. What was really unnerving was when the pack split and 2 were in front of me and 2 behind but they never bothered me. Usually they run across my path....they look at me, I look at them and we all move on. I was actually more worried the other morning when I saw a skunk and was very afraid of startling him!!!!

If the skunk would have seen you we'd probably have to call you "Stinky".
    How's the LB training?

Ya, I saw 2 more on my run this morning....they are running rampant in rotary park. LB is lacking; big time! I have not gotten a good 20 miler in yet and it's in 4 weeks. I have decided that I need to accept the fact that I might not be able to do it; or do the half instead. I think I am having some mental blocks because I can't get past 8 miles without feeling like I have to walk :(

Ok, so Richard and I were at a meeting this morning where a client informed us casually that he was attacked by two coyotes while out on his evening run! I told him to give me the details, especially since this discussion has been recently posted on the board. He said he was running up Empress, he saw the coyotes, thinks they sensed his fear and came toward him and just about grabbed his leg when a neighbor driving home saw what was happening and ran them both over! CRAZY! So I asked Richard to do some research and he has written a great article and posted it on the front page of what to do and not do if approached by coyotes. Please give it a read!

No coyotes, but I did see a herd of 17 deer when I was running in HOUSTON last summer. Was not expecting that in the "big city!"

There were three of them on the track at 4:45 this AM. Kind of nerve wracking in the dark when you can't tell exactly where they are. I guess they didn't like my company because by the time I was 2/3 around the track they took off thru the gate and into the wash. Relief! After they were gone I had a decent workout 7 x 800; all within 15 seconds of each other. Look out St. George and Ragnar, here I come!!!!!
