We the great “HAVASU HUSTLERS” ran the inaugural Ragnar Las Vegas relay this weekend. We really had a great time and needless to say, everyone is ready for another one. It was the first for everyone but me since I ran the Wasatch Back in June. One thing I found out about Ragnar, when they say very hard, they mean it…BIG TIME!!!. If they every said very, very hard, I'd forget about doing that event. (LOL). My three legs were 8.6 (very hard), 3.6 (hard) and 3.9 (moderate). My first leg started downhill for a mile (okay, time to hold back a little) then rolled and dropped a total of 200 feet to mile 3.5. I was trying hard to be conservative since I knew the next 5 were all uphill, and uphill it was. There was construction so part of it was rocky and loose gravel and with cars driving over it pretty dusty. My second run was at 1:30AM…in the dark, the first two miles uphill, in a drainage ditch with sprinklers running and water coming down the hill. That went on for most of two miles. Somewhere it switched from the ditch to a trail and somewhere the trail ended and I kind of freaked because there were no signs and I wasn’t sure where to go. Off to the left I saw the ditch again and took off in that direction and started up the ditch only to notice a couple minutes later someone above me on the trail. I stayed in the ditch as long as I could but it came to an underpass that was too low so I had to scramble up a hill to find the trail again. Fortunately other runners had made the same bad decision. After that episode it turned onto some city streets, leveled out and I finished that one pretty well. BTW, if any of you have driven toward Boulder City and down the hill toward Lake Mead, you know that steep hill, well that was the one I ran UP! I remember driving it last year thinking I would hate the idea of running or biking up this hill. Never thought in my wildest dreams I'd do it. My third leg started in the middle of a long gradual climb and stayed that way the whole time except for about a ½ mile fairly flat stretch, well at least it looked flat. The total climb was 330 feet, which doesn’t sound all that bad but when you’re operating on 3 hours sleep over the last 24 hours it’s not easy. One thing I will say, all the other teams were supportive as well as my own was, not only with the ‘looking goods’, and all the other things we normally hear, but offering water and spraying runners, if they want it. My times were all slower than I predicted but I was satisfied with what I did. I think I usually set my goals at a level I used to be able to easily reach and it’s hard for me to get there anymore but if I didn’t do it that way, I wouldn’t put in as much effort to achieve them.
GREAT FUN, GREAT TEAM and a lot of WONDERFUL TEAMMATES. THEY REALLY ROCK.

You are awesome Mel. I was just getting back to walking half way normal after St George and you are out doing a 24 hour relay race. Good job to you and the entire Havasu team.

Mel, I agree with Dana. You are amazing to be running any kind of race 1 week after SGM. Sounds like you guys had a great time. Congrats.
